MDS

The Minimum Data Set (MDS) is part of the U.S. federally mandated process for clinical assessment of all residents in Medicare or Medicaid certified nursing homes. This process provides a comprehensive assessment of each resident’s functional capabilities and helps nursing home staff identify health problems.

MDS

As part of this process, Resource Utilization Groups (RUGs) help guide care planning and resource allocation. MDS assessments are completed for every resident, regardless of payment source, starting at admission and continuing on a set schedule. Most assessments are completed by licensed professionals, typically RNs, and the data is securely submitted to both state and national CMS databases.
